The Spacecraft Monitoring Station shown in an earlier photo was decommissioned in 1974, and the building was turned over to the Air Force. The equipment was moved into the structures shown in the foreground of the photo opposite. This facility is located on the grounds of the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island and is managed by the Goddard Space Flight Center. All the functions from the previous facility are now carried out at this station. The operating staff is augmented with personnel from JPL, Pasadena, for each of the launches involving the Deep Space Network. In the background lie the manned spacecraft facilities with the launch pads for the shuttle and future manned vehicles. Ground communications with the spacecraft on the launch pad at the Cape Canaveral Air Force station continue to be supported. Implementation, operation, and maintenance of the DSN equipment and DSN mission test supervision are governed by a JPL-Goddard Space Flight Center memorandum of understanding.
